THERE’S no need to panic but we’ve got to get our gear into a suitcase pronto as we’ve got an early flight. So what do we pack? Top of the list has to be medications. Without them we’re in serious trouble. Then there’s the mobile phone. Where would we be without it? It’s our office – we can call people, email people, text them, use the internet, navigate our way to our destinations with them, if it gets dark we can use them as a torch.

One day I was in a restaurant in the United States, on a one-month holiday, and someone said you need to give the waitress a 15% tip. I had to use the utility function on my phone to find a calculator. But then with the overuse of the phone, a  phone charger suddenly becomes indispensable. You get to the airport and you need documents like passports and tickets.

It’s nearly midnight already and your suitcase or hand luggage is still half empty. So what’s missing? Where that t-shirt you wanted to wear on the beach, those nice trousers, beachwear, underwear, socks and hat? In it goes! Then the toiletries – toothbrush, soap, shampoo, toilet paper, the list is now coming to an end, AND a spare pair of shoes.

Do You Speak English? I’m Lost And Need Some Help!

If you’ve forgotten anything, don’t despair. The chances are that you can get all these things at your destination if you can speak Polish and your destination is Gdansk, Italian if it’s Verona, Hungarian, if it’s Budapest. A friend of mine went backpacking in India. He spoke several dialects and during his travels he got lost. He approached an Indian man and asked him for directions. The guy didn’t understand him.

He spoke to the man in the six other Indian dialects and he still couldn’t get him to understand. In frustration, he said: “Do you speak English? The guy replied: ‘Yes’.” So there is a God out there. The other option for many Brits who don’t speak a foreign language is if they speak loud enough, somebody will hear you and say ‘I speak English, how can I help?
