When I go on holiday, what boots should I take? I like to go on a long walk or  climb up a small hill, so I like to put on a good pair of hiking boots.

There are alternatives to hiking boots like hiking sandals, water shoes and sneakers, but I prefer something more sturdy.

A good pair of hiking boots will provide you with ankle support, especially on uneven or challenging terrain. This helps prevent ankle sprains and injuries, which can be especially problematic on long hikes. There are more than 118.26 million people who hike globally and the global market size for hiking is $12.24 billion. Post Covid-19 pandemic, more people have taken up hiking as an outdoor pursuit.

Good Pair Will Withstand Really Tough Conditions

It’s worth getting a good pair of hiking boots which are built to withstand tough conditions, like sharp rocks, loose gravel, and wet environments. Compared to regular shoes, hiking boots have aggressive treads with deeper lugs, providing superior grip on slippery surfaces like mud, wet rocks, and loose soil. This helps prevent slips and falls, aiding in overall stability.

Waterproof Membranes Keep Your Feet Nice and Dry

This keeps your feet dry in wet conditions, from puddles to light snow, ensuring comfort and preventing blisters. Unlike other footwear hiking boots offer protection from various elements, including sharp rocks, sticks, and cold temperatures. The elevated ankle coverage also shields against insect bites and scratches.

However not everybody is a fan of hiking boots. Some find them heavier than regular shoes, requiring more energy to lift and move your feet, which can lead to fatigue on long hikes.  Compared to the flexibility of regular shoes, hiking boots can feel stiff and restrictive, especially during the break-in period. This can be uncomfortable, especially for those used to lighter footwear.

Hiking Boots Take up More Space Than Regular Shoes

Hiking boots take up more space than regular shoes, making them less convenient to pack if you’re traveling with limited space. Due to their sturdiness and waterproofing, hiking boots can be too warm for hot and humid climates, causing excessive sweating and discomfort.

Hiking boots are generally more expensive than regular shoes. But in my opinion they are worth every penny. But ultimately whatever you are most comfortable wearing- that is your choice.

Here Are a Few Top-Rated Hiking Boots For Different Holidays:

  • Best Overall Hiking Boot: La Sportiva Ultra Raptor II Mid GTX  – They are considered ideal hiking shoes for men. I love the soles which prevent you from slipping. When it’s a perfect fit, the boot stays dry after crossing water. An extra benefit is a neoprene-like backing above hill section of the boot preventing debris from entering the boot.
  • Best Budget Hiking Boot: Merrell Moab 3 Mid WP. The boot comes with a full grain leather upper with waterproof membrane, which seals out water and lets moisture escape. It has 100% recycled laces and webbing. The mesh lined removable PU insole is recyclable. It also has a lightweight EVA foam midsole with Merrell Air Cushion in the heel to absorb shock and adds stability when climbing.
  • Best Lightweight Hiking Boot: Salomon Speedcross Gore-Tex men’s trail running shoes. They are waterproof, have an aggressive grip, and are a precise fit. Made in Vietnam, its new GORE-TEX construction reduces bulk and improves comfort, while maintaining complete weather protection.

Approach Shoes combine climbing shoe features with hiking shoe features, offering good grip and control on technical terrain, comfortable for scrambling and light hiking.

Like trail running shoes they give less ankle support than some boots, are not as protective or durable as boots, and not ideal for long distances or heavy loads.

Hiking Sandals are cool and comfortable for hot weather, allow your feet to breathe and dry quickly, and are good for lightweight hikes on well-maintained trails. Like approach and running shoes there is no ankle support or protection, they are not suitable for rough terrain or cold weather, and not  ideal for long distances or heavy loads.

Water Shoes are excellent for wet conditions like water crossings or beach hikes, lightweight and easy to pack, and  good for short hikes or casual exploring.  On the downside they offer minimal protection and support, and are not suitable for challenging terrain or long distances.
